Main developments during weeks 16–39/2009

  •  The first cases of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 in three European Member States were reported to WHO on 28 April 2009. As of 11 October, 49 out of 53 Member States had reported over 61 000 cases.

  • The large majority of the reported cases have been mild. Nevertheless, as of 11 October 2009, 193 laboratory-confirmed deaths in 18 countries had been reported to WHO/Europe.

  • 97% of A-subtyped viruses were pandemic (H1N1) 2009 (N = 17 612) during weeks 16–39/2009.

  • A few countries in the European Region (e.g. Ireland, Malta and the United Kingdom) experienced clinical influenza activity due to pandemic (H1N1) 2009 during the summer.
