New report on progress towards global measles control
An article on progress towards global measles control during the period 2000-2010 has been published in the most recent edition of the World Health Organization's Weekly Epidemiological Record. The report shows improvements in vaccination coverage and surveillance, but continued challenges in some regions where outbreaks continue to occur.
The final conclusions state, "Reversing the recent increases in reported cases and achieving further progress towards 2015 [measles elimination] targets will require meeting the following key challenges: (i) declining political and financial commitments to measles control; (ii) failure to reach uniform high coverage with two doses of MCV through routine services or SIAs; and (iii) inadequate monitoring subnationally of MCV1 and MCV2 coverage to guide interventions to increase coverage."
