WHO donates equipment to support response to measles outbreak in Kyrgyzstan 10-03-2020
WHO has donated computer and other laboratory equipment to the subnational measles and rubella laboratory in Osh, Kyrgyzstan, which will be used to monitor these viruses in the southern regions of the country. Kyrgyzstan is experiencing a measles outbreak that started in 2018. In 2019 alone, 2369 cases of measles were reported in the country.

Collaboration between health and education sectors helps improve vaccination coverage in Ukraine 17-02-2020
Stopping the recent measles outbreak in Ukraine has required good coordination at all levels between the health and education sectors. Among other joint actions, verification of children’s immunization status through school-based records was initiated to identify children at risk and to inform immunization catch-up campaigns. In line with the Ministry of Health’s Workplan on Immunization for 2019–2021, of which WHO is a partner, WHO conducted a national workshop on 18–19 December 2019 to help make this verification approach a regular part of immunization practices.
Strengthening response to measles outbreak in Ukraine 22-01-2020
Ukraine has reported over 57 000 measles cases for 2019, representing over half the total number reported in the WHO European Region (for the period January to November 2019). As part of a comprehensive response to this outbreak, the Public Health Centre and State Expert Centre of the Ministry of Health and WHO conducted a series of 2-day workshops in 12 regions of the country in 2019 to enhance the skills of regional rapid-response teams in line with national and global standards for outbreak response.
Strengthening national laboratories’ oversight capacity to support measles and rubella elimination 08-01-2020
Detection and control of communicable diseases would not be possible without accurate laboratory data on when and where a particular disease is circulating. WHO/Europe therefore works with all Member States to steadily improve the quality and reliability of the laboratory data used to determine the Region’s progress towards measles and rubella elimination. The latest step in this process is to support accredited laboratories at national level in developing country-specific oversight mechanisms to ensure quality data is received from all levels of their countries’ disease surveillance systems.

Measles cases hit record high in the European Region 20-08-2018
Over 41 000 children and adults in the WHO European Region have been infected with measles in the first 6 months of 2018. The total number for this period far exceeds the 12-month totals reported for every other year this decade. So far, the highest annual total for measles cases between 2010 and 2017 was 23 927 for 2017, and the lowest was 5273 for 2016. Monthly country reports also indicate that at least 37 people have died due to measles so far this year.

Increased coverage in WHO European Region leaves fewer children vulnerable to vaccine-preventable diseases 23-07-2018
Coverage rates for most routine vaccines in the Region increased in 2017 compared to the previous 3 years. Most notably, according to new WHO–United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates, 90% of children in the Region received the necessary second dose of measles-containing vaccine (MCV2) in 2017 according to their country’s routine schedule (compared to 88% in 2016), and 94% of children received the third dose of diphtheria–tetanus–pertussis-containing vaccine (DTP3) (compared to 92% in 2016).

Ukraine restores immunization coverage in momentous effort to stop measles outbreak that has affected more than 12 000 this year 04-05-2018
Over 12 000 people have been infected with measles in Ukraine so far this year. Of those affected, 9158 have required hospitalization and 9 have died, according to information provided by national health authorities as of 27 April 2018. Large-scale outbreak response measures have been undertaken since the start of the outbreak in 2017 to curb further spread of the disease and restore high routine immunization coverage.

Albania mounts rapid and comprehensive response to measles outbreak 14-03-2018
Albania is one of the countries in the WHO European Region that have successfully interrupted endemic transmission of measles and rubella. Since achieving measles elimination in 2015, the country has reported sporadic imported cases of measles. This includes cases in the second half of 2017 that were followed by a few separate outbreaks with a small number of cases and limited period of transmission. A recent and much larger outbreak has been a greater test of the Albanian health system. However, due to sustained high immunization coverage through the country’s well performing national immunization programme, along with a prompt and comprehensive outbreak response, it is anticipated that the outbreak will be controlled and that the country will maintain its measles elimination status.

The number of countries in the Region that have demonstrated interruption of measles and rubella continues to increase and now stands at 42 for measles and 37 for rubella. However, Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, warns that immunization coverage is decreasing. 1 in every 15 children still does not receive the first vaccination dose against measles and rubella on time.

Successful national measles and rubella vaccination campaign in Tajikistan 27-06-2017
Nearly 2 million children aged 1–9 years were vaccinated against measles and rubella during a nationwide vaccination campaign in Tajikistan on 15–26 May 2017. The campaign was initiated in response to a measles outbreak which began in 2016 and has caused over 400 confirmed measles cases.
Minister of Health of Montenegro visits WHO/Europe 08-06-2017
Dr Kenan Hrapović, Minister of Health of Montenegro, visited WHO/Europe on 6 June 2017 to discuss health priorities and collaboration with the Regional Office. Analysis of measles and pertussis outbreaks and response in 2016 05-05-2017
Measles and rubella surveillance data are regularly analysed to identify characteristics of cases and outbreaks reported throughout the European Region. The first issue of WHO EpiBrief for 2017 reveals that the highest burden of measles disease in 2016 fell on young, unvaccinated children, but that thousands of adults were also affected. The report also describes the outbreak response in Italy and Romania and provides data on a pertussis outbreak that took place in Denmark in 2016.

Europe making steady progress toward measles and rubella elimination 23-11-2016
A growing number of countries in the WHO European Region has interrupted endemic transmission of measles and rubella. The European Regional Verification Commission for Measles and Rubella Elimination (RVC) concluded at its 5th meeting held 24–26 October 2016 in Copenhagen, Denmark, that based on reporting for 2015, 37 countries have demonstrated interruption of endemic transmission of measles and 35 of these countries have also demonstrated interruption of rubella. In many parts of the Region interruption has been sustained for at least 36 consecutive months, allowing the RVC to verify elimination of endemic transmission of measles in 24 countries and of rubella also in 24 countries.

With far fewer cases reported in the first half of this year (1683) compared to the same period in 2015 (29 726), incidence of measles has dropped dramatically in the WHO European Region. Rubella also continues to fall, with 50% fewer cases so far in 2016 (736), largely due to a decrease in cases in Poland. Epidemiological data on measles and rubella for the first half of the year are now available in the WHO EpiData 2/2016.

Greece extends vaccination to refugees and migrants 29-04-2016
Two vaccination campaigns for the refugee and migrant population in Greece will begin in early May 2016, in order to ensure that all those who require vaccination receive it. Vaccination will be provided according to Greece's national immunization schedule. The first campaign, led by Médecins sans Frontières (MSF), will cover approximately 6000 individuals in Idomeni, and the second will cover approximately 20 000 individuals in the rest of the country.

WHO, UNICEF and UNHCR call for equitable access to vaccines for refugees and migrants 23-11-2015
In this joint guidance, WHO, the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) underline that refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants should have non-discriminatory and equitable access to health care services, including vaccines, irrespective of their legal status. The United Nations agencies do not recommend vaccination at border crossings unless there is an outbreak of a vaccine-preventable disease in the host or transit country. Instead they recommend that refugees and migrants should be vaccinated without unnecessary delay according to the national immunization schedules of the country where they are envisioned to reside for more than a week.
Expert report reveals uneven progress toward global immunization targets 12-11-2015
The Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP) set ambitious but achievable goals to save thousands of lives through vaccination in what is called the Decade of Vaccines (2010-2020). In its third report on progress towards GVAP goals, the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) warns that the Plan is not on course to achieve its true potential. While good progress and even historic achievements have been made in some countries, isolated improvements will have to become the norm if the plan is to get back on track.

Kyrgyzstan initiates mass vaccination campaign as measles cases continue to soar 16-03-2015
In response to a large-scale measles outbreak, Kyrgyzstan will initiate a mass measles vaccination campaign on 16 March 2015, targeting over 2 million people aged 1–20 years in the country. The outbreak, which began in early 2014, has caused over 11 300 suspected cases to date and continues to increase by 120–250 suspected cases every day.

A WHO assessment of the cause of the death of 15 children in rural Idleb, northern Syrian Arab Republic, has concluded that the most likely cause of the event was the incorrect use of a drug called Atracurium as a diluent for measles/rubella vaccine.

Russian Federation supports measles and rubella elimination 18-07-2014
The Government of the Russian Federation has allocated 329.5 million roubles (approximately 9.5 million US dollars) for 2014 and 2015 to support the World Health Organization’s efforts to eliminate measles and rubella in the European Region. The directive allocating the funds, which was signed by the Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev in Moscow in April 2014, states that 94.5 million roubles should finance the costs associated with providing logistical support to laboratories that handle measles diagnosis in the Commonwealth of Independent States.

In light of continuing measles and rubella outbreaks in the WHO European Region and inadequate responses to them, the European Technical Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (ETAGE), during its annual meeting on 9–11 October 2013, encouraged Member States to make or revisit action plans for measles and rubella elimination and urgently to address immunity gaps in their populations. Georgia expands immunization campaign to prevent further spread of measles 26-08-2013
Representatives of the Georgian National Center for Disease Control and Public Health met with WHO experts at the Regional Office in Copenhagen on 14–16 August 2013 to evaluate progress in responding to a measles outbreak and plan the next phase of the campaign. In collaboration with WHO and other partners, Georgia will expand this campaign in the coming months to reach children 14 years of age and younger as well as special groups throughout the country that are known to have lower population immunity. This phase targeting approximately 100 000 individuals will also be used as an opportunity to provide polio vaccines to underimmunized groups in difficult-to-reach areas.

The report reveals that measles declined by over a third in the European Region last year (with 23 871 cases) compared with the total number of reported cases in 2011. Despite gains in controlling rubella in most countries of the Region, however, outbreaks in Poland and Romania contributed to a more than 200% increase in the total number of rubella cases in the Region in 2012 (with 29 361 cases) compared with 2011, when 9461 cases were reported.
