Are prisons in Europe healthy?
Over 2 million people across the WHO European Region are in prison. Prisoners are at greater risk of HIV, tuberculosis, poor mental health and drug addiction than people outside.
Prisoners come from and usually return to the community. Limiting the spread of communicable diseases in prison thus benefits both prisoners and the wider community, and reduces the burdens on a country’s health system as a whole.
The WHO Health in Prisons Programme supports Member States by addressing health and health care in prisons, and facilitating the links between prison-health and public-health systems at both the national and international levels.
Three short films look at health in prisons in Azerbaijan, Denmark and Kyrgyzstan, and three snapshots offer an overview of health-related issues in the Belgian, Slovenian and Swiss prison systems.
