Treatment guidelines and protocols

Countries should develop and use national, standardized treatment guidelines and protocols. These can:

  • help to ensure that all patients receive adequate treatment at all levels of health care services;
  • facilitate the training and supervision of health care providers; and
  • help to reduce the risk of developing resistance to antimicrobial drugs.

Having a standardized list of antimicrobial agents facilitates appropriate drug procurement.
