TB/HIV coinfection

  • Sharply increasing trends of HIV coinfection among tuberculosis (TB) cases (from 5.5% in 2011 to 9.0% in 2015) reflect the rapid spread of HIV infection in the WHO European Region. This is of special concern in the Region, where the cumulative number of HIV cases reached over 2 million for the first time in 2015.
  • People suffering from TB/HIV coinfection have a 7 times higher risk of failing treatment and a 3 times higher risk of dying than people with TB only.
