Real stories of people living with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis
WHO/Europe is working closely with nongovernmental and civil society organizations to address Tuberculosis (TB) and multidrug- and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (M/XDR-TB). One of the six components of the STOP TB Strategy is to empower communities and people with TB through partnership; this component specifically mentions the involvement of TB patients in TB care and prevention. In order to implement successful TB and drug-resistant TB treatment programmes, it is important to listen to people with TB and TB/HIV co-infection to address the obstacles that they face in accessing treatment and their views on the services and support needed.
Médecins Sans Frontières has engaged with people receiving treatment for MDR-TB from around the world to allow them to tell their stories, their difficulties in accessing and receiving care and their opinions on what they think is needed to help improve TB services.
