WHO/Europe conducts external review of the Moldovan National Tuberculosis Programme
A team of 12 international and 6 national experts visited 19 districts and 3 municipalities in the Republic of Moldova during the first week of a review conducted from 4 to 15 February by WHO/Europe on the request of the Ministry of Health. During the second week the team visited central institutions and met with policy makers in Chisinau.
Key findings and recommendations were discussed with the Minister of Health upon completion of the review, and a final report is expected to be presented prior to a roundtable discussion with all stakeholders in May.
Background
The Republic of Moldova is among the 27 high multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) burden countries in the world and rates of TB/HIV are also increasing in the country. The major challenges for TB control in the Republic of Moldova involve service delivery, human resources, financing and infection control.
