GATS country report and factsheet

The GATS is a powerful tool for policy-makers and enhances the countries’ capacity to design, implement and evaluate tobacco control programs. It provides a detailed description of the tobacco epidemic across age, gender, urban/rural and socioeconomic status allowing policy-makers and programme managers to approach tobacco control with a gender and inequality lens. It also illustrates gaps in enforcement of the law (e.g. smoke-free, advertising and legal age) and shows valuable information on public support for laws not yet implemented (e.g. smoke-free, pictorial warnings).

All countries that have conducted GATS have released country reports and fact sheets, which have received wide media attention. Dissemination efforts beyond the initial release have also proven to be valuable in promoting stronger legislation for fighting tobacco.
