Poland launches Decade for Action on Road Safety

The road safety campaign, "Decade for Action on Road Safety" was launched on 11 May 2011 in Poland by the United Nations, WHO and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent. Some of the participants included the Marshall of the Lower House of Parliament as well as the President of the Parliamentary Team for Road Safety Affairs. Experts presented findings about road safety, current work done by the Ministry of Interior Affairs and about visibility on the roads.

Other informal events took place, including Various presentations by the Oncology Centre, the Heart Transplant Centre and the Union of the Spirit Industry. The main priorities of the road safety decade were presented, followed by a live concert by the band IRA.

The five pillars of the Decade for Action are:

  • investing in safer roads;
  • building capacity for road-safety management;
  • developing safer vehicles;
  • encouraging safer road use; and
  • improving post-crash response.
WHO/Europe supports Member States through:
  • developing and enforcing legislation on key risk factors;
  • improving emergency trauma care;
  • upgrading standards for road and vehicle safety;
  • promoting road safety education; and
  • Building capacity for road-safety management.
During the event, representatives of the participating organizations and politicians actively participated by presenting their programs, views and current progress in making roads safer.
