WHO injury prevention curriculum applied to local context in Azerbaijan

A training workshop on preventing violence and injuries was held on 26-27 February 2013 in Baku, Azerbaijan, using the TEACH-VIP (Training, Educating and Advancing Collaboration in Health on Violence and Injury Prevention) curriculum developed by WHO and a network of global injury prevention experts.

Eighteen participants joined the workshop organized by WHO/Europe and the Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics of the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan. The Director of the Institute opened the workshop, which was conducted in the Russian language.

The TEACH-VIP training material and methodology provided the framework for instruction, which focused on road safety, child injury prevention, violence prevention and surveillance. The curriculum was presented by Dr Rustam Talishinskyi, WHO focal person for violence and injury prevention in Azerbaijan.

Adapting the TEACH-VIP training material to the local context is an important part of its use, and interactive working group sessions were therefore organized to allow participants to discuss local data and case studies.

The participants rated the workshop highly, and requested further adaptation of the content to the national context as well as translation of the materials and exercises into the Azeri language.
