Contaminated sites and health in Sicily, Italy
Upon request of the Sicilian local Government, WHO/Europe conducted a study in Sicily, Italy, on health in 3 areas hosting large industrial facilities. The areas of Augusta-Priolo (more than 200 000 inhabitants), Gela (more than 100 000 inhabitants) and Milazzo (more than 50 000 inhabitants) are experiencing high levels of environmental contamination following 40 years of (mainly petrochemical) industrialization.
The project investigated the relation between environment and health in the 3 areas, collecting available data and conducting studies (for example on biomonitoring, children's respiratory conditions and risk perception). The scope of the project was later extended to cover remediation and the use of health impact assessment in rehabilitation plans. Expected results include the development of guidance for remediation from contamination including prevention and health care.
