This publication presents the methods of collecting, recording and preserving sandflies (Diptera, Psychodidae and Phlebotominae). Separate chapter is devoted to the morphological characteristics of sandflies relevant to their taxonomy. Keys for identifying genera of the subfamily Phlebotominae, as well as subgenera and species of the genus Phlebotomus, are included. The final chapter describes the taxonomic traits of species included in this identifier, as well as their ecological features and medical significance. This publication is intended as a practical guide for medical workers and entomologists working in leishmaniasis control programmes in Central Asian countries. It will help them to identify the sandflies species and ensure methodological consistency in collecting and recording these insects. An extensive list of references is provided to obtain additional information about sandflies and leishmaniases.
