Jo Eirik Asvall was WHO Regional Director for Europe from 1985 to 2000. An enthusiastic champion of the Health for All approach, he set an example of public health leadership. This memorial guide draws on interviews both with Asvall himself and with 60 colleagues and friends to illustrate his life and achievements.

After retiring from the WHO Regional Office for Europe, he moved on with undiminished energy to run the Danish Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims. He died in February 2010, as committed as ever to Health for All and the future of public health in Europe.
