To celebrate World Health Day, and as part of ongoing cooperation related to patients’ rights issues, the WHO Country Office, Ombudsman, Ministry of Health and French Embassy in Uzbekistan jointly organized a conference on 6 April 2012. The objectives of the conference were to:

  • highlight the role played by WHO in promoting health and human rights;
  • recognize the linkages between health and human rights;
  • further understanding of a human-rights-based approach in the development of health programmes, including teaching aspects in medical schools and post-graduate education;
  • identify the human rights implications of public health practice and how to strengthen the human rights impact of public health programmes.
Part of the conference was devoted to improving curriculum development related to patients’ rights issues in medical schools and postgraduate institutions. A second part focused on how to create a mechanism in the health system to ensure human rights from the patients’ and service providers’ perspectives.

The conference was attended by the Ombudsman and regional representatives, the Ministries of Health, Justice, and Higher Education, rectors of medical schools, the French Embassy, an expert on patients’ rights from France, parliamentarians, NGOs, representatives from the United Nations and other international organizations and the mass media.
