The workshop, organized as a collaborative activity between WHO, the Health department of the Government of Catalonia, Spain, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, followed the global celebration of the World Blood Donor Day event 2010. Representatives from fourteen priority countries agreed upon the barriers and challenges in achieving 100% voluntary nonremunerated donation of blood and blood components, and learnt from international dedicated work, including the South East European blood safety project. Participants revised strategies and plans for the development of relevant programmes in their own countries. A set of recommendations was developed.
