“When I think about why I donate blood, I ask myself a very simple question: ‘If I was on the other side and was in serious need of a blood transfusion, wouldn’t I hope someone had donated that blood for me?’ I have been donating blood since I was 18 and although it is a simple gesture for me, I know it is one that goes a long way for those who need it.”

Blood connects us all – blood donation text message service in Sweden 14-06-2016
Only a quarter of blood donations in high-income countries come from young people (up to age 24). An initiative in Sweden lets blood donors know via text message when their blood has been given to a patient. This is one example of using technology to recruit new donors and to keep them donating. In January 2013, Tajikistan began implementation of a new national system for reporting adverse reactions, incidents and events related to transfusion therapy. In preparation, a WHO expert on blood services visited Tajikistan in October–November 2012 to assess the country’s reporting system and help develop a national protocol.

In response to an increasing need for blood donations, the WHO Country Office organized a voluntary blood donation event in the United Nations (UN) House in Dushanbe on 17 January 2013. WHO staff and other UN colleagues were invited to participate, and 24 people donated blood.
Donors recognized in Uzbekistan on World Blood Donor Day 07-08-2012
World Blood Donor Day 2012 focused on the theme "Every blood donor is a hero". An official ceremony to mark the day and recognize donors was conducted at the National Blood Centre (NBC) of Uzbekistan on 14 June 2012. In recognition of World Blood Donor Day on 14 June 2012, more than 400 people have voluntarily donated their blood in the Republican Blood Donor Centre in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Donations have so far come mostly from health care workers, but the campaign will continue through 21 June, encouraging everyone to donate blood to help others and save lives.

World Blood Donor Day is an international event celebrated on 14 June every year to thank regular blood donors, increase awareness of the need for blood donations; and encourage more people to give blood. World Blood Donor Day 2010 will focus on young donors with the slogan “New blood for the world”. As the need for blood increases globally, young people can make an important contribution by donating blood and by recruiting others to do so.
