As one part of a major study undertaken by the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, this book investigates the critical gaps in the health care workforce and their management in nine European countries. It seeks to communicate a sense of urgency to address the many key workforce issues that seriously impede the ability of health systems in Europe to enhance their performance and to achieve their goal of improving population health. To achieve this, it examines the policies that have already been put in place and highlights key areas where appropriate interventions are still needed to ensure an effective development of human resources for health, and the harmonization of policies and practices relating to the health workforce with national health goals.
