Areas of work

WHO/Satish Mishra

The disability and rehabilitation unit supports Member States in improving rehabilitation within their country contexts and in enabling all people with a disability to achieve better health.

Disability and rehabilitation is an important area of work for WHO/Europe in view of its focus on equity, social justice, health systems strengthening, governance and the whole-of-society approach. These principles are all underpinned by Health 2020, the European policy framework for health and well-being.

WHO’s work in the Region is based on the following areas:

  • improving access to quality health services for people with disabilities;
  • strengthening rehabilitation services, including access to assistive products; and
  • strengthening relevant and internationally comparable data on disability.

In addition, WHO works on the Eye care and the Ear and hearing care to reduce avoidable vision and hearing impairment as a public health problem, and to secure access to services for those in need.
