Working closely with Member States and local organizations, WHO/Europe offers technical support and has established several projects to ensure that health care professionals put evidence and experience into practice, using medical intervention only when necessary; and involve families and the whole community during pregnancy and childbirth.

Many changes have resulted from questioning and sometimes discarding old and familiar interventions previously considered appropriate or essential.
