Midwife demonstrating good practice

WHO/Europe develops strategies and tools to help policy-makers and leading experts to adapt and apply the Making Pregnancy Safer framework to different country contexts. For policy-makers, it has provided:

  • the European strategic approach for making pregnancy safer;
  • a tool to assess the health system’s performance in improving maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health;
  • a tool to assess the quality of hospital care for mothers and newborn babies;
  • a training package on effective perinatal care.
  • a set of guidelines for the integrated management of pregnancy and childbirth.

WHO/Europe draws on these to build capacity in Member States.

The global strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ (2016-2030)

In 2016, the global strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health was lounged. The aim of the strategy is to improve health of women, children and adolescents and to end all preventable deaths by 2030. In line with the Sustainable development Goals (SDGs), the objectives of the strategy are to:

  • Survive – End preventable deaths
  • Thrive – Ensure health and well-being
  • Transform – Expand enabling environments

The strategy is based on the previous strategy (2010-2015) and on the Every Woman every Child movement

Every Woman every Child

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon fronted this movement together with numerous stakeholders, such as governments, the UN, private sector and civil society, striving to address some of the main health challenges to women, children and adolescents. The overall aim of the movement is to stop preventable deaths for these populations. This is hoped to be achieved within the timeframe of one generation and thrive within a lifetime. The Every Woman every Child movement is supported by technical support from WHO.
