This brochure documents some of the success stories from the work of the WHO Regional Office for Europe – through its Making Pregnancy Safer programme (MPS) – in the European Region in the past 10 years. MPS is active in the countries with the greatest needs: the newly independent states and the Balkan countries.

The ultimate goal of its work is to help improve the health of and care for mothers and babies. Building on existing programmes and the characteristics of the Region, MPS designed a framework and steps for implementation, including a set of complementary tools specifically adapted for these countries. Moreover, it has created a roster of international and local experts. Partner agencies such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and others play an indispensable role in disseminating MPS methodologies and materials throughout the Region.
