National stakeholders and WHO experts discuss use of WHO/Europe nutrient profile model in Estonia

On 24 September 2015, the WHO Country Office in Estonia organized in collaboration with WHO/Europe an open discussion with several Estonian stakeholders to discuss possible adaptations and adjustments for the use of the WHO/Europe nutrient profile model in Estonia.

The aim of the meeting was to:

  • present the model
  • test and apply the nutrient profile to a list of common foods in the country
  • discuss further steps of using the nutrient profile at national level.

At the end of the meeting, participants had a greater understanding about nutrient profiling and agreed upon some collaborative actions.

Participants

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Rural Affairs, the National Institute for Health Development, the Estonian Food Industry Association, the Veterinary and Food Board, and the WHO Country Office. Dr João Breda, Programme Manager for Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity at WHO/Europe, guided the meeting.

WHO Europe nutrient profile model

The nutrient profile model is for use and adaptation by Member States of the WHO European Region (on a voluntary basis and taking into account individual national circumstances) when developing policies to restrict food marketing to children. In July 2013, health ministers of the WHO European Member States adopted the Vienna Declaration on Nutrition and Noncommunicable Diseases in the Context of Health 2020. This Declaration acknowledged the high burden of disease caused by unhealthy diets in many countries of the Region and expressed particular concern about the rise of overweight and obesity among children.
