Obesity poses one of the greatest public health challenges for the 21st century, with particularly alarming trends in several regions, including the WHO European Region. This was the first Member States Consultation in the process leading up to the Ministerial Conference on Counteracting Obesity in November 2006, convened in Copenhagen, Denmark on 10 to 12 October 2005. It was organized by the WHO Regional Office for Europe and co-hosted by the Danish National Board of Health. The Consultation discussed and agreed upon the main framework, objectives, agenda and expected outcomes of the Ministerial Conference and outlined the preparatory process for the Conference. The meeting also discussed and agreed upon a process for the development of the second European action plan on food and nutrition policies.
