Gender and HIV/AIDS in eastern Europe and central Asia

This report is the result of a study on how gender influences the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Eastern Europe. The study was undertaken by the Division of International Health (IHCAR), Karolinska Institutet during October-December 2003 and commissioned by the WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/EURO). It is divided into two parts. Part I is a thorough review of the literature on HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia from a gender perspective. Part II consists of case studies from Estonia, the Russian Federation and Kyrgyzstan, three countries at different stages of the epidemic and with different economic and social resources at hand to tackle HIV/AIDS.
