The Venice Office is WHO/Europe’s centre of excellence in the thematic areas of health equity, social and economic determinants of health, and investment for health in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
It aims to generate and disseminate cutting-edge knowledge and to assist the Member States of the WHO European Region, at both national and subnational levels, by building strong partnerships and networks with governments, the public and private sectors, academia and think tanks, as well as a broad range of civil society stakeholders.
The work programme of the Venice Office encompasses 3 closely interrelated areas:
- social determinants of health (SDH) and health equity
- healthy settings networks
- investment approaches for health and well-being
The Venice Office’s Health Equity and SDH Programme provides tailored policy support to countries to design, implement and evaluate multisectoral policies for health and health equity. During 2014–2017, direct support was provided to 13 Member States across the Region.
The Health Equity Status Report (HESR) Initiative is producing the first WHO/Europe Regional Atlas of Health Equity Status and a status report on policy progress to increase equity in health.
As part of its intercountry work with networks, subregional collaborations and platforms, the Venice Office coordinates two networks:
- Regions for Health Network
- small countries initiative.
The Office was established in 2003 through a memorandum of agreement between the Government of Italy, represented by the national Ministry of Health and the Veneto Region, and WHO/Europe.
