Armenia

Despite the fact that the level of maternal mortality in Armenia has decreased from 47 deaths per 100 000 live births in 1990 to 25 in 2015, it is still 8 times higher than the average level of MMR of the EU countries and is twice as high as in the WHO European region (4 and 16 deaths per 100 000 live births, respectively).

WHO/Europe has worked with the Ministry of Health and partners in Armenia for some years, to support work and build capacity for different aspects of maternal and newborn health.

The biennial collaborative agreement for 2018–2019 will address life-course issues such as inequality, health systems and public health capacities.

WHO/Europe will continue supporting the Ministry of Health in the development of plans to expand access to and quality of interventions, including adaptation and implementation of guidelines and assessing innovative initiatives for improved quality of maternal and newborn care in Armenia.
