Latvia

WHO/Europe has worked with the Ministry of Health and partners in Latvia for several years to support work and build capacity for different aspects of reproductive, maternal and newborn care.

Most of Latvia has initiated introduction of confidential analysis of maternal death cases, as well as review of severe maternal and perinatal morbidity cases - Near-miss case review (NMCR). WHO/Europe involves internationally recognized experts in assisting Latvia in introducing maternal and perinatal audits and NMCR.

Next steps in improving maternal and newborn health in Latvia is to introduce national guidance on nutrition during pregnancy, based on WHO recommendations. This activity requires strong collaboration between family doctors, obstetricians, gynaecologists and nutrition specialists.
