Subregional workshop on antimicrobial resistance from a food safety perspective

Durres, Albania, 30–31 May 2012

A second subregional workshop addressing antimicrobial resistance from a food safety perspective took place in Durres, Albania on 30–31 May 2012. The aim of the workshop was to:

  • contribute to increasing the awareness of antimicrobial resistance, with specific emphasis on the food safety perspective, at the national level in Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia;
  • discuss intersectoral actions that can be taken at the national level to address antimicrobial resistance, specifically in the food chain;
  • promote relevant national activities to help combat antimicrobial resistance.

The workshop was organized by the WHO/Europe Food Safety Programme in collaboration with WHO country offices in Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia. Presentations were delivered by WHO, the European Commission, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the Danish Technical University (DTU), the Public Veterinary Institute (Istituto Zooprofilattica Sperimentale, IZS) in Italy, and national experts from Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia. Group discussions were also carried out among the participants.

Participants at the workshop were selected professionals from the public health, food and veterinary authorities and academia, from Albania, Croatia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia. There were also observers from Kosovo (in accordance with Security Council Resolution 1244 (1999)).
