Country work
WHO/Europe supports its Member States through building institutional capacity in assessing the health impacts of climate change, and through a public health approach of cooperation with national multisectoral committees for identifying and prioritizing adaptation measures.
Activities are in line with World Health Assembly resolution WHA61.19 on climate change and health and support implementation of the European Ministerial Commitment to Act on climate change and health.
Multicountry projects
- A 7-country initiative to protect health from climate change, supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, involved Albania, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Uzbekistan. The project addressed adaptation, strengthened health systems, built institutional capacity and identified specific intervention needs (e.g. early warning, energy efficiency in health care).
- Country profiles are prepared as a means to share experience and to provide the basis for the development of national adaptation plans. They are the result of a large multicountry questionnaire and the revisions of country assessments and studies.
- At the request of countries, WHO provides advice for:
-
- the preparation of national assessments of health effects of climate change;
- the integration of health into the development of national or subnational (health) adaptation strategies or action plan;
- the development of national communications to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).
