Albania
Projected climate changes in Albania include increases in temperature and decreases in precipitation especially during summer, decreasing water quality and quantity, and problems in hydro-power energy production. Poor urban air quality is being worsened by climate change.
Such changes could increase frequency of respiratory diseases, increase heat-related mortality, alter the transmission of infectious diseases and contribute to health service damage and reduced service delivery.
Project country-specific activities to protect health from climate change
- Assess health impact, vulnerability and health system adaptation
- Develop a national health adaptation strategy
- Capacity building and training in early identification of potential infectious disease risks and outbreaks to improve disease surveillance systems
- Improve air quality monitoring to reduce air pollution in Tirana as a pilot
- Strengthen public health services
- Assess energy efficiency in hospitals as a contribution to ‘greening’ the health sector
- Inform citizens and students on the health effects of climate change and on protective actions.
