The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

The country is expected to experience an overall increase in temperature, more frequent and more intense heat-waves and more droughts and flood events. The 2008 national communication on climate change anticipated increases in heat-related mortality, changes in the distribution of infectious diseases, risk of appearance of tropical infectious diseases as well as foodborne disease outbreaks.

Country-specific activities

  • Assess health impact, vulnerability and health system adaptation as a basis for the development of a national health adaptation strategy
  • Develop, evaluate and implement heat-health action plans
  • Modernize hospitals in a climate change perspective: piloting energy-efficient health services (solar panels) as a means to protect from heat
  • Raise awareness on health effects of climate change and on preventive protection measures.
