Uzbekistan
The initiative deals in particular with the North-western part of the country, the Republic of Karakalpakstan (RKK), known because of the Aral Sea crisis. In this area, respiratory diseases are already a problem. Projections indicate further increase in temperature, increase in dust storms and droughts and reduction of precipitation.
The expected consequences on health include further increases in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, infectious and diarrhoeal diseases, and further nutrition problems related to reduced food security.
Project country-specific activities to protect health from climate change
- Assess health impact, vulnerability and health system adaptation
- Develop a national health adaptation strategy
- In the pilot area (RKK), training on management of respiratory diseases is linked with early warning systems for dust storm and early respiratory disease case detection and treatment
- Assess the effects of climate change on nutrition through a pilot survey (contributing to the implementation of the European Food and Nutrition action plan).
