Protecting health from climate change - leaflets

Recognizing that global climate change is posing ever growing threats to public health security, in 2008 the WHO Regional Office for Europe started a two-year project funded through the International Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. “Protecting health from climate change. A seven-country initiative” focuses on taking action against the health effects of climate change in seven European countries: Albania, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Uzbekistan.

The project supports actions and pilot-tests some interventions in countries that are already experiencing climate-related problems (such as extreme events, water scarcity, glacier melting, permafrost thawing) that are rojected to have severe health effects. All countries ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and are committed to do more to protect health from climate change by increasing awareness and improving intersectoral cooperation. Activities are carried out by national Governments through bilateral agreements with the WHO Regional Office for Europe in the framework of the WHO global workplan on climate change and health.
