Small team of cancer nurses has a big impact on Scotland’s Western Isles
“We are definitely the key workers in people’s cancer journey,” says Hazel Hebditch, one of 7 cancer nurses based on Scotland’s Western Isles, also known as the Outer Hebrides. “Most other places you get different teams – not the same continuity of care. That’s the uniqueness and real value of our service, that wherever the patient goes, we are able to see them in that environment, whether it be the hospital, in the patient’s own home, in a care home or in the hospice. This is the very satisfying part of our work. You really get to know the person, their circumstances, their family, what matters to them, what really makes them tick.”
