Over 1.2 million children have received 2 drops of oral polio vaccine (OPV) in Tajikistan in the past week, in the first round of a campaign to stop circulation of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) detected in the country. This represents 99% of the children targeted to receive vaccination during this campaign.
Vaccines for supplemental polio vaccination campaign arrive in Tajikistan 26-05-2021
On Sunday, 23 May 2021, 4.6 million doses of novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) arrived in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. These vaccines will be used for a nationwide poliomyelitis (polio) immunization campaign planned for May to July 2021 in response to the ongoing outbreak. During the campaign, almost 1.4 million children under the age of 6 will be targeted to receive the vaccine to strengthen protection against type 2 poliovirus.

Circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 detected in Tajikistan 19-03-2021
As of 18 March, 4 paralytic cases of children infected with circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) have been reported in Tajikistan, with several cVDPV2 cases detected in community and close contacts. The first cVDPV2 case with onset of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) was reported on 22 November 2020 in Khatlon Province, linked to a virus strain currently circulating in Pakistan. A second case of cVDPV2 was confirmed in February 2021 in a child that presented with AFP in Khatlon Province. On 8 March, 2 more cVDPV2 cases with AFP were confirmed in Hisor District. In addition, 3 environmental samples from the newly established surveillance site in Dushanbe were reported cVDPV2 positive.

New WHO report reveals that while smoking continues to decline among European adolescents, the use of electronic cigarettes by young people is on the rise 02-12-2020
Tobacco use among young people in the WHO European Region remains a public health concern. Despite the overall downward trend, several countries of the Region observed an increase in tobacco use prevalence among young people in the latest round of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey. While cigarettes remain the most used form of tobacco products, there is a concerning trend emerging from the use of electronic cigarettes (or e-cigarettes). According to the latest available data, young people are turning to these products at an alarming rate. The new report reveals that in some countries the rates of e-cigarette use among adolescents were much higher than those for conventional cigarettes. In Poland, for example, 15.3% of students smoked cigarettes and 23.4% used electronic cigarettes in 2016.

Tajikistan: strengthening rehabilitation to leave no one behind 23-09-2019
Robia was only 6 months old when she fell ill in 2009 and was unable to move her legs. After a month, doctors diagnosed her with polio and she was sent to a rehabilitation centre, but for several years she made no progress. In 2013, however, things changed. Robia started to have physiotherapy and received training in everyday life-skills that could make her independent. She received a support brace from the National Orthopaedic Centre, which is adjusted as she grows.

Provision of wheelchairs in Tajikistan: report reveals insufficient levels of supply 04-06-2019
A new report published by WHO reveals that Tajikistan’s current levels of supply of quality wheelchairs are insufficient and that service facilities, such as maintenance and repair centres, are not provided or are underfunded. The report, the first of its kind, focuses on the economic aspects of the provisioning of wheelchairs. It assesses access to, quality of, and the need for wheelchairs and provides an overall framework for effective policy development, including 3 models for improving the production of wheelchairs. The strength of the wheelchair provision system influences the way a person accesses health services and integrates into society, and has an impact on education and employment opportunities.

The National Health Strategy of the Republic of Tajikistan for 2010–2020 (NHS 2020), approved by the Tajik government in 2010, became a milestone in the development of the health-care system in the current decade. Four additional countries in the WHO European Region have successfully added the inactivated poliomyelitis (polio) vaccine (IPV) to their routine immunization schedules this year. This progress means that IPV will now be routinely offered to children in every Member State in the Region, as prescribed in the global Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013–2018.

To truly understand the needs of adolescents, it is vital to listen to adolescents themselves. This was a central feature on the agenda of the first ever inter-country meeting and international conference addressing the mental health and well-being of adolescents living in central Asia, which took place on 17–20 January in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The meeting was hosted by the Government of Kazakhstan and organized by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with WHO. Country delegations from Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan, as well as Kazakhstan, participated in the exchange of knowledge, experiences and plans to better understand and address the mental health needs of adolescents.
New comprehensive tobacco control law in Tajikistan 04-01-2018
A new tobacco control law passed both houses of Parliament in Tajikistan at the end of 2017. President Emomali Rakhmon signed the law on 2 January 2018. The new law applies to all tobacco products, including cigarettes and cigars as well as hookahs, smokeless cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.

A group of 22 bacteriologists and laboratory technicians attended a training course in Tajikistan to strengthen their competencies in antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). They came from the laboratories of regional and city infectious disease hospitals and sanitary epidemiological surveillance service centres, and from the National Reference Laboratory of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.

New research from WHO conducted in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan has found that street food commonly sold in these countries contains high levels of salt and trans fat. Breaking the link between disability and exclusion in Tajikistan 07-08-2017
Several hundred Tajik people need long-term rehabilitation care following a large poliomyelitis (polio) outbreak in 2010. To support the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Tajikistan, WHO set up a disability rehabilitation programme in 2013. The programme improves the provision of and access to rehabilitation services for people with disabilities, with a focus on those affected by polio.

Successful national measles and rubella vaccination campaign in Tajikistan 27-06-2017
Nearly 2 million children aged 1–9 years were vaccinated against measles and rubella during a nationwide vaccination campaign in Tajikistan on 15–26 May 2017. The campaign was initiated in response to a measles outbreak which began in 2016 and has caused over 400 confirmed measles cases.
Central Asian countries strengthen readiness for future emergencies 21-06-2017
Twenty-three health professionals from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan were trained on management and coordination of large-scale emergencies that require a response from medical teams. In Tajikistan’s capital city of Dushanbe, it is not difficult to find restaurants and cafés serving everything from national dishes like plov and freshly baked non to burgers and salads. But it can be hard to find one where you can guarantee that the person sitting next to you won’t be smoking. This is because Tajikistan currently allows smoking in restaurants, although a new tobacco-control law making its way to the Parliament will limit the ability to do so. Journalists can play a unique and vital role in raising awareness about the dangers of smoking and in building public support for tobacco control initiatives. For this reason, Tajikistan hosted a 2-day workshop, organized by WHO/Europe, that brought together nearly 30 members of the media – as well as representatives from government ministries, health organizations and the consumer protection association – to expand their skills for reporting on tobacco. The workshop took place on 30–31 March 2017 in Dushanbe.

Polio outbreak simulation exercise (POSE) conducted in Tajikistan 01-03-2017
A two-day tabletop national polio outbreak simulation exercise (POSE) was conducted in Tajikistan on 14–15 February 2017. Over 20 participants from the Tajik Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the Republican Centre of Immunoprophylaxis and its regional branches, and staff from the State Sanitary Epidemiological Surveillance Service participated in the exercise. The simulation provided the opportunity to review the country’s new national plan for responding to the detection of wild and vaccine-derived polioviruses.
Tajikistan launches National Programme on Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities 26-01-2017
On 28 October 2016, the Government of Tajikistan approved and adopted the National Programme on Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (2017–2020) through Resolution No. 455. The goal of the multisectoral National Programme is to improve health, rehabilitation and social protection for people with disabilities to create an enabling environment with equal opportunities for all in Tajikistan. It focuses on all individuals with long-term impairments (physical impairments, blindness, speech and/or hearing impairments, intellectual impairments or mental health conditions) as well as individuals who experience functional difficulties due to noncommunicable diseases, infectious diseases, neurological disorders, mental illness, injuries, conditions after surgeries or ageing.

The WHO disability rehabilitation team in Tajikistan – in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, Ministry of Education and Science and Association for the Blind – conducted a three-day training course in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, from 29 November to 1 December 2016, on rehabilitation management of children and adults with low vision and blindness. Population-based cancer registries are needed for quantifying the burden of cancer and assessing national prevention and control programmes. Well trained cancer registry staff play a crucial role in ensuring good-quality data and adequate data analysis, interpretation and dissemination. WHO/Europe and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) with its Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development programme have collaborated to develop and improve capacity for cancer registration in the WHO European Region, particularly in countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Strengthening capacity for sentinel influenza surveillance in Tajikistan 13-12-2016
Since 2014, PIP Partnership Contribution funds have been used to finance the WHO Regional Office for Europe’s collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population to support the development and implementation of measures to strengthen and expand national capacity for influenza surveillance and control. In particular, a pilot system for the surveillance of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) was implemented at two sites in Dushanbe in March 2016. Although there had been previous efforts to establish sentinel surveillance in Tajikistan, in effect sentinel influenza surveillance was not operational when the pilot started.

Yesterday morning, a new US$6 million grant agreement was signed between the Global Fund and the Center for Health Policies and Studies (PAS Center), a nongovernmental organization based in the Republic of Moldova, as the principal recipient of a regional grant to boost tuberculosis (TB) control in the subregion. The grant agreement, supported by WHO/Europe, covers 11 eastern European and central Asian WHO Member States and the Global Fund. It starts in January 2016 and will run for 3 years.

The number of malaria cases in the WHO European Region has dropped dramatically. Cases reported locally have declined from above 90 000 in 1995 to only two reported in Tajikistan in 2014. Statistics indicate, however, that about 5000 cases were imported into the Region in 2014, and the threat of reintroducing the disease remains. The WHO European Region aims to interrupt the transmission of malaria and eliminate the disease by the end of this year.

The Tajikistan Ministry of Health and Social Protection, in collaboration with the National Multisectoral Laboratory Working Group (NLWG), has developed a proposal for a national laboratory policy that envisions government-led, affordable and quality laboratory services available in the country by 2020. Throughout 2014, the WHO Country Office in Tajikistan led a “Zero Discrimination” campaign, aiming to raise awareness among the public and decision-makers about the problems faced by people living with HIV. The activities culminated on 16 December 2014 with an official award ceremony for winners of a mass media contest. The ceremony honoured creators of the best mass media products on issues related to the fight against stigma and discrimination for people living with HIV.

Rehabilitation centres in Tajikistan are receiving assistance from international occupational therapists to improve the quality of disability and rehabilitation services for children and adults with disabilities in line with international standards and norms on disability rehabilitation. Six weeks of training at the centres for therapists, nurses, doctors, people with disabilities and their family members in November–December 2014 will be followed by a 3–day national workshop on occupational therapy practices and interventions for rehabilitation centre staff from all over the country.

Participants represented various ministry departments, medical academia and partners, including the United Nations Children’s Fund and the Agha Khan Foundation. As teachers, medical practitioners, and decision-makers this group is considered to be particularly influential and important in terms of promoting vaccine uptake.

Structured Operational Research and Training Initiative (SORT IT) in eastern Europe and central Asia 11-07-2014
In line with The Consolidated Action Plan to Prevent and Combat Multidrug- and Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in the WHO European Region, 2011–2015, WHO/Europe together with TDR has been leading the Structured Operational Research and Training Initiative (SORT IT) in eastern Europe and Central Asia in collaboration with MSF, Union, KNCV and CDC. This training course comprises three workshops, inter-workshop mentorship and support by international experts, and an operational research project led by the participant.

Armenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will be the first countries in the WHO European Region to benefit from the PIP Framework, a unique partnership between industry, civil society and governments to improve pandemic preparedness and access to antiviral medicines and vaccines. Addressing the legacy of polio in Tajikistan 18-06-2014
Most of the victims of the 2010 polio outbreak in Tajikistan were children, many of whom have developed physical impairments that require long-term rehabilitation care. In partnership with Ministry of Health, WHO initiated a disability rehabilitation programme to address the needs of this group, and in March 2014 with the technical support of the WHO Country Office, rehabilitation camps were organized to assess their current needs and develop appropriate intervention plans. Technical assistance was also provided to guide the country in strengthening appropriate service providers.

Better services for people with disabilities in Tajikistan 21-11-2013
The WHO Country Office, Tajikistan is working with the Government to improve disability rehabilitation services and increase the numbers of trained rehabilitation professionals in the country. With financial support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), they have started a three-year project to develop a national policy, and improve the system and services for physical rehabilitation, with a focus on community-based services and human resource development. The project will address a wide range of disabling conditions for which rehabilitation can improve the quality of life, including poliomyelitis (polio).

A campaign to treat people infected by worms was launched in Tajikistan and drew to a close at the end of September. Reaching some 4 578 000 people including pre-school and school-age children and women of reproductive age (17 – 49 years), the campaign aimed to reduce morbidity caused by soil transmitted helminthiases and protect the health of the population.

Tajikistan newest party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control 15-07-2013
Tajikistan has recently ratified the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), and will enter into force on 19 September 2013. Tajikistan becomes the 50th Member State (out of 52) in the WHO European Region, along with the European Community, to be party of the WHO FCTC treaty. The evidence shows that the measures within the WHO FCTC, particularly when applied comprehensively, are greatly effective in saving lives and improving health across the WHO European Region.
Launch of rehabilitation project in Tajikistan 08-07-2013
The Ministry of Health, WHO Country Office and USAID have joined forces to develop physical rehabilitation programmes for polio survivors in Tajikistan. There was an outbreak of polio in Tajikistan in 2010, eight years after the European Region was certified as polio free. Right from the beginning of the outbreak, planning began for enhancing Tajikistan’s capacity for polio rehabilitation. Disability organizations such as Operation Mercy and Handicap International played a key role organizing regular training for health care workers and parents.

Technical training in Tajikistan enhances food safety 05-06-2013
Five days of hands-on laboratory training in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, came to an end on 24 May 2013. Thirty food safety professionals from the public health and veterinary sectors took part in the training, which focused on early detection of Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp., two very common bacteria causing foodborne diseases, as well as resistance to antibiotics in these bacteria.

To help scale-up the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) approach in Tajikistan, a training of trainers course was held on 25–30 March 2013 in Dushanbe. The purpose of the training was to strengthen the capacity of national trainers to implement the IMCI Innovative Computerized Adaptation and Training tool (ICATT). Water safety project: success stories in Tajikistan 08-10-2012

Second phase of Tajikistan’s diphtheria campaign underway 05-10-2012
2.5 million young people in Tajikistan are to be vaccinated against diphtheria in the second phase of a national campaign started earlier this year. The Government, with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and WHO, began the first round of the second phase on 24–29 September 2012, focusing on those aged 7–21 years. The second round, from 29 October to 3 November, will target those aged 13–21.

New project launched in Tajikistan to manage mass casualties in a disaster 10-07-2012
A new project "Improving Mass Casualty Management in Tajikistan" has been launched to strengthen the management of a large number of casualties in the event of a disaster (Mass Casualty Management, or MCM). The first project-related event, on 4 July 2012, brought physicians from the Ministry of Health together with staff from the Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense, along with fire services and police staff from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, to assess current MCM practices in the country.

Central Asia in the spotlight: growing HIV epidemic among people who inject drugs 19-06-2012
In the WHO European Region, people who inject drugs are particularly at risk of being infected with HIV. Concern is increasing in five central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan), where more than half of newly diagnosed HIV infections occur among such people. One of the objectives of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy of Tajikistan is aimed at guaranteeing access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for those living with HIV. Activities to achieve this goal include ART as part of the education for all medical students and training of family doctors in ART provision to support integration of HIV treatment into primary health care services.

The Government of Tajikistan approved the strategy in 2008. It was developed with technical support from WHO and based on the European strategy for child and adolescent health and development. The implementation of the strategy was assessed in May 2011, using the WHO tool to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the European strategy. Tajikistan was the first country in the WHO European Region to apply this tool.

Implementation of the WHO Making Pregnancy Safer (MPS) programme has helped reduce maternal mortality in Tajikistan. According to estimates by WHO, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the World Bank, maternal mortality fell by 44% between 1990 and 2008: an annual decline of 3.3%. In 2008, there were 64 maternal deaths per 100 000 live births in Tajikistan.

An outbreak of poliomyelitis (polio) started early in 2010 in Tajikistan, eight years after the WHO European Region was certified as polio free. According to government statistics, 712 acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases were notified. Most patients are in the recovery phase, but some have already started showing signs of residual paralysis. All people affected could benefit from rehabilitation.

Tajikistan, which had been polio free since 1996, experienced a massive polio outbreak in 2010 following an importation of poliovirus from northern India. As of 11 June 2010, Tajikistan had reported 607 acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases; 239 were laboratory confirmed for wild poliovirus type 1, and 22 had been confirmed negative. There had been 11 deaths among the 239 confirmed poliomyelitis (polio) cases (4.6%).Three rounds of national immunization days (NIDs) had taken place in Tajikistan and two rounds in Uzbekistan. In both, coverage was extremely high: over 99% of the targeted populations. Further rounds are expected in both countries, and Kyrgyzstan will begin an immunization campaign in July.
